Friday morning August 8th dawned with
a bright hazy sunshine. As I sat on my porch overlooking the Indian
River eating my breakfast I contemplated what might lie ahead. You
see, this was the day that represented the beginning of our biggest
ride adventure of the year. Our yearly excursion to Jensen Beach was
about to begin. 70 miles down and who knows how many miles running
the St Lucie Inlet and surrounding areas before heading back on Sunday.
Would the weather cooperate? Would we have smooth sailing, storms,
lightning? Would we have folks with mechanical breakdowns? Would folks
remember to bring anchors, plenty of line (rope)? Lots of stuff on
my mind as President of SCJR. As I slid my trusty Yamaha HO off my
dock and headed south to meet up with the clubbers that were trailering
to Ballard Park those concerns were racing through my mind. And which
route should we take? Ocean or river? When I approached the bridge
at Eau Gallie Boulevard I could see drivers gawking at me at 8:15
in the morning and I chuckled, I bet they all wish they were me about
now. My earlier concerns quickly faded away. Then I thought there
must be about 200 million folks in this country right now who would
pay a lot of money and possibly give up a body part to be able to
take part in the adventure that we were about to partake. I said a
silent prayer of thanks and greeted the 11 riders that were there.
We left Ballard and met up with 2 more members at Sebastian Inlet.
We chose the ocean to ride to
Ft Pierce Inlet and it was a terrific choice. The water was clear
and turquoise. We saw dolphin and turtles and the ocean was flat with
intermittent swells to add to the experience. There is not enough
time to tell you about all of our exploits but you can look at the
pix and get an idea. The all girl bicycle race was certainly a highlight
as was the annual performance of Swing Low Sweet Chariot With Gestures
by our esteemed TIM MOBERLY. CAPT. JOHN WILANSKY was our leader and
we arrived at CONCHY JOES
for lunch in record time. We had a bunch of folks trailer their skis
to Jensen beach so our number swelled to over 20. Dinners at CRAWDADDY'S
certinly rank as a highlight with 20 plus clubbers there all at once.
I think we entertained the other diners. Of course, as good as Crawdaddy's
was, there were a few of us that liked the ice cream at KILWIN'S afterward
even better . When we arrived back in Melbourne on Sunday we had logged
almost 200 miles on our skis and had way too much fun and excitement
to recount in one short article.
Just look at the pictures and use your imagination and eat your heart
out if you weren't one of the lucky ones that could make it to the
JENSEN BEACH ADVENTURE.
